چکیده

[1] Abundant and well-preserved marine macrofossils on Seymour Island, Antarctica, provide a valuable resource to establish paleoenvironmental conditions at high southern latitudes during the warm Paleogene. Stable isotope, minor element, and Sr/Sr compositions have been measured for the aragonite bivalve Cucullaea from the Eocene La Meseta Formation. The Sr/Sr stratigraphy suggests an early to late Eocene age for the La Meseta Formation. Sea surface temperature estimates based on dO values range from 14.5 to 15.5 C in the early and middle Eocene to 10.5 C in the late Eocene. High-resolution sampling along growth structures provides estimates of seasonality in temperature, which decrease considerably up section. To address the relative contribution of temperature and ice volume or salinity to the dO record, Sr/Ca was measured and evaluated as a potential independent paleothermometer for Cucullaea.

Before the freeze: otoliths from the Eocene of Seymour Island, Antarctica, reveal dominance of gadiform fishes (Teleostei)

The first record of fossil teleostean otoliths from Antarctica is reported. The fossils were obtained from late Early Eocene shell beds of the La Meseta Formation, Seymour Island that represent the last temperate marine climate phase in Antarctica prior to the onset of cooling and subsequent glaciation during the late Eocene. A total of 17 otolith-based teleost taxa are recognized, with 10 bein...

Plankton diversity and aquatic ecology of a freshwater lake (L3) at Bharti Island, Larsemann Hills, east Antarctica

The Larsemann Hills range is an ice-free oasis on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, which includes Bharti Island, Fisher Island, McLeod Island, Broknes Peninsula, Stornes Peninsula, and several other islands, promontories, and nunataks. The Larsemann Hills is an ice-free area of approximately 50 km2, located halfway between the Vestfold Hills a...

Fossil bryophytes as recorders of ancient CO2 levels: Experimental evidence and a Cretaceous case study

[1] Biological and geochemical CO2 proxies provide critical constraints on understanding the role of atmospheric CO2 in driving climate change during Earth history. As no single existing CO2 proxy is without its limitations, there is a clear need for new approaches to reconstructing past CO2 concentrations. Here we develop a new preQuaternary CO2 proxy based on the stable carbon isotope composi...

Early cenozoic glaciation, antarctic weathering, and seawater

Stable and radiogenic isotopic and sedimentological data from sub-Antarctic deep sea sediment cores reveal a temporal link between changes in seawater SrrSr ratios and major episodes of late Eocene–early Oligocene climate change. The SrrSr records show two major inflections, one at 38–39 Ma near the middlerlate Eocene boundary, followed by another at 33.4 Ma. Similarly, the oxygen isotope, ice-...

End-Cretaceous extinction in Antarctica linked to both Deccan volcanism and meteorite impact via climate change

The cause of the end-Cretaceous (KPg) mass extinction is still debated due to difficulty separating the influences of two closely timed potential causal events: eruption of the Deccan Traps volcanic province and impact of the Chicxulub meteorite. Here we combine published extinction patterns with a new clumped isotope temperature record from a hiatus-free, expanded KPg boundary section from Sey...
